How To Start A Side Business or Side Hustle Starting a side business while you are working elsewhere, either part time or full time, can be the best way to begin when you want to be your own boss. It will be hard; there is no denying that, but it can also be worth every moment of hard work and stress. If you think that you are ready to start a side business, then here are some steps to take and think about carefully. Be Committed Giving yourself so much extra work to do will become difficult. There will be times when you are exhausted, stressed, angry, even when you are wondering whether it is all worth it. Work through these times and stay committed to your idea. If you want it to work, you will need to push through knowing that it will get better. If time is the issue, then look at all the activities you do during the week. You might play sports or go out with friends, for example. Or you might sit and watch TV for a couple of hours each night. Although exercise and friendship are important, you might feel that your business also needs time devoted to it, so instead of going out three times a week, you go out twice. As for TV, if you switch TV time for business time, you will find you get a lot more done. Be Legal No matter how big or small your side business is, it is still a business, and when it comes time to give up the day job and concentrate on it full time, it will pay dividends if you have already registered the business and if you’re already paying taxes. Before you spend time and money on setting up the business, do some market research. Don’t just ask your friends and family as they are likely to agree with you. Instead, ask complete strangers in the street or online and see if there is enough interest for you to truly make something of your idea. Set Goals At some point, you will want to step away from your day job and concentrate solely on your side business (which, of course, will be your main business by then). They offer consultations to develop viable business plans while directing you to a variety of resources, funding, and opportunities locally and nationwide. Apply for Private Small-Business Funding and Grants for Female Business Owners  A few businesses and private organizations sponsor grant programs to encourage entrepreneurship. When Networking Doesn’t Pay Off I wanted to share this story from a client with you regarding networking and when it doesn’t pay off. We always hear from career coaches that networking is THE way to land a job. Then clients will come to us saying they met with someone and nothing came out of it. Others will tell us (client Christina in Chicago said this last week) that their meeting was awkward and it seemed pointless. This can happen and … it doesn’t mean that networking doesn’t pay off. It’s a game of numbers everyone, you have to put yourself out there as much as possible, just like sales and get a certain number of “no’s” before you get a “yes.” Here’s the story: “The quick update is that Im continuing to network and had lunch with the HR guy from Spanx this week. Nothing really there, but glad I hooked up with him. In the meanwhile, I raised my hand for a new piece of business we were pitching and we won the biz. It looks like Ill be working on this over the course of the next 6 mos or so, and Im thrilled. Lots of good stuff going on!” -Anna in Atlanta Anna’s networking meeting didn’t pay off. I had this happen to me. I spoke at an event that was a bust in terms of gaining business. No one signed up for coaching afterwards and although the event was well attended, it wasn’t a financial success. But the director for the Mercer EMBA program heard about me through the marketing of the event and contacted me about coaching their students. We’ve been working with them for 4 years, one of our largest contracts as a company so far. So you never know if or when networking will pay off. It might not be immediately and it might not be a direct correlation, but it still is the best use of your time in your job search
